Dog Blog #9 8/28/10

Saturday began with an early 7 o’clock bus ride to Columbia where we played 3 matches. We played for 50 minute blocks. The first game was against Missouri S&T, the second against Rockhurst, and the third against Quincy University. Overall it was a successful day, we improved from last weekend being more consistent with our faster offense and utilizing our aggressive serves to keep the other teams scrambling. Everyone rotated throughout the day. Today showed a lot of positives and also things that we need to continue working on. We ended the day refereeing, which is a bit of a bummer, but that’s what you get when you’re one of the closest teams. But at least we played well enough so Ben didn’t say, “Lunch has been cancelled due to lack of hustle”. So we went to Chipotle for a delicious after game meal.

Dog Blog #8 Final Day of Preseason 8/25/10

All I have to say is…. TWO-A-DAYS ARE OVER!!! As much as we love sweating through three shirts each practice and taking multiple showers every day… or not… I think we’ll all be pretty happy to get back into the regular school practice schedule.

Practices were pretty good today. This morning, outsides and liberos came in early to work on passing, which I feel is getting better and better every day. When the rest of us came into the gym at 9:30, we worked on defense and hitting specific shots. It was basically a practice to work on skills, which always helps.

This afternoon we started off with setters and right sides coming in early to work on connections with middles. We did a little blocking, then went straight into scrimmaging which usually gets pretty intense. We’re all extremely competitive so people are always yelling about touches, balls landing in/out… like I said, it gets intense. Anywho, all in all I felt like it was a very good and energetic practice, and we’re getting better and better every day. After practice, we went up in the weightroom and got jacked as always. No wonder our team is ridiculously strong… we’re even competitive up in the weightroom. You win some you lose some.

Time to go watch movies with the roommates and get ready for the first day of school tomorrow!

Peace & Love,

Dog Blog #7 8/24/10

Today, in honor of Megan Sharpe's Birthday, Ben decided to cancel one of our practices! Okay, not really in honor of her birthday.... but we did have only one practice today in order to go out and do some fun team bonding this afternoon. In the morning, we came in bright and early at 8:30 and went straight to work on hitting, blocking, and some defense. We played a game called Nev's pepper, which really brought the competition between the hitters and our defenders. We ended the practice with a few scrimmage games, and although it was a really tough morning we were finished early so it was nice to be out of the gym before it really started getting hot!

At 1:30, we met back up at the ROTC repelling tower to do some teamwork exercises with Colonel R. He split us up into two groups and sent us through a variety of obstacles where we were required to work together, come up with a strategy, and complete the challenge in under the specified time limit. Except for a few time penalties, a close mishap with a bridge crumbling over a river (sorry again Casey!), and a tough break on the last obstacle we did a pretty good job all working together.

We ended the day by watching some film and talking about the games from the weekend. All in all it was a pretty fun day and I know everyone is excited to bring the energy and go in tomorrow for our last set of two-a-days plus lifting!

Dog Blog #6 8/23/10

Mondays: usually the day most people dread. Naturally there’s never a dull moment here with Truman Volleyball and this Monday was definitely no exception.

First and foremost: HAPPY 21ST BIRTHDAY PETEY! This week is full of birthdays as I celebrated my 21st yesterday as well and Megan Sharpe’s brings in her 19th year tomorrow! If you get the chance, send Ashley and Megan a happy birthday.

Another big announcement today…CONGRATULATIONS MISS MEGAN AND COACH KEARNEY ON YOUR ENGAGEMENT!!!!!! Once our second practice was started, Ben randomly called a team meeting to the locker room. Of course we all thought we were getting spanked for something but it was Miss Megan who did the talking. She pulled her hand out of her pocket and there it was. Imagine telling 16 girls about a new engagement. It took .5 seconds for all of us to stand up and SCREAM. It was great. Again, congrats Miss Megan!

Amidst all of the celebrations and excitement, on the court we spent a lot of time focusing on offense today. A slight change of pace but we’re getting better every play, every day. And since the construction in Pershing is still going on, we had to put the tarps down to avoid the dust – oh hello hot box. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I can’t wait for some cold fronts to come through.

Hope to see you this weekend in Columbia!

Arrivederci,

Dog Blog #5 8/22/10

Saturday was the first time we were able to play against other schools for the 2010 season. We played each team for 50 minutes. We started out the day by refereeing at 10am. Then we played William Penn at 11am. We also played Indian Hills Community College and Hannibal LaGrange. All of the matches went very well, and everyone worked hard and played very well. It was a good day to learn what we really needed to work on as a team. It also showed that we have been working hard to be better players and I think it really showed during the scrimmage. We have improved a lot from last year and we are going to keep on improving! After a long week of practices and our scrimmage we were all ready for a much needed day off. I spent the whole day relaxing; as did everyone else I’m sure. It was very nice to have a day off but now we are ready to get back to three days of two-a-days, and then school on Thursday! We are all ready and excited for another busy week! Go Dogs!

Friday August 20, 2010

It was pretty hard to make myself get up this morning, but knowing it was the last two a day of the week helped. Setters, Right Sides, and Middles came in early to work on setting and connections between the middles and right sides. The gym is getting warmer every day, so we’re thankful that we’ll be playing at the Primary School, which has AC, tomorrow!

When the ‘bros and outsides came in, we began to work ball control drills as well as blocking. Miss Megan also suggested we work on our pancakes… let’s just say everyone got a kick out of me diving for the ball. I live by the saying “the bigger you are, the harder you fall.” I have some new bruises to prove it too.

This afternoon was a lighter practice. We’re all feeling a bit sore so Ben and Miss Megan wanted to make sure we rest up a bit for tomorrow’s long scrimmages. We worked individually on what we thought our weakest points are at the moment. The practice was kept pretty short and sweet. It’s was a nice change of pace to be out of Pershing before 5 pm. We’re all really excited for our scrimmage tomorrow against Indian Hills and Hannibal LaGrange. Well, Molly, Tassia and I are going to play Monopoly. Have a great night!

Thursday was a productive day for the team. Besides it being the hottest day we've had yet during preseason, we pushed through and made great improvements. We focused a lot on defense and worked several drills for ball control in the morning, and in the afternoon we played six on six to get an idea of our progress. It was great to be able to see how far we've come in these last couple days! The coaches filmed our scrimmage so that we can review and look at what else we need to work on. Overall, it was a great day to review the progress we've made, focus on defense, and get ready for our scrimmage Saturday!

Dog Blog #2- 8/18/10

Day two of preseason began with middles and outsides coming in a half hour early for our individual session. We worked on lots of blocking and serving. I could definitely feel the soreness starting to set in. Once the rest of the team was warmed up and ready to go, most of the morning practice was filled with defense and blocking. We worked on a new blocking drill that was designed to help us press our outside hands over the net.

After our lunch break we returned to practice at 3. There was much more competition in the second practice. We played a new game called serve four. It’s a high intensity game where different stats are kept for each position, focusing mainly on blocking and defense, our main focus of the day. For example, the middles tracked their blocking stats. At the end of the game whichever player had the most points in their position was safe while the rest of us had to run. Running is always a good incentive to win.

Around 7 that night, we headed to the Armory, where we took pictures for our team poster. We had a HMMWV or humvee and (fortunately) unloaded weapons. The American flag was our awesome back drop. After the team picture we split up and did pictures by position, class, or any other group that we wanted one with. Of course, many of the girls did the jumping into the air picture…classic. It was super duper fun and I know that they will turn out really well. Keep a look out of for the posters and hopefully we will see everyone at a game this fall!

"Dog Blog" Preseason Day 1 8/16/10

So the start of another preseason, sadly I can admit that it is my last. For all the times we complain about the long practices and bruised bodies…I love it!!

We started bright and early Monday at 9 am for the setters and 9:30 for the rest of the team. It was like the first day of school. (You’re excited, nervous, you hope to make friends, and want to make your best impression) It was great to see everyone after three months; I could tell that the team had all really worked hard this summer. Our first of two practices of the day started off good, we did a little defense, serve receive, hitting, and more skill work. After our first practice it was off to lunch and then to team pictures.

You would think that after all these years of taking pictures we would think to bring a mirror. We’re girls after all. Everyone was worried about their hair, including me, but I think they will all turn out wonderfully.

Off to second practice of the day where we did a lot more team work drills. It is definitely going to take a few days to get that connections back with the hitters. For some reason this second practice was a tad hotter in Pershing, I sweated through three shirts. I hadn’t sweat that much since freshman year. After practice we had a wonderful lifting session…OUR TEAM IS STRONG!!!

I am super excited for this season. I know we’re kinda young but I know for a fact that there is not another team around that wants to succeed as much as we do. I have a feeling its going to be a crazy ride this year and I am so happy that we get to share it all with you!!!!
Thanks for all the support, hope to see/hear you at our games!
